About Cvikov

The history of the brewery in Cvikov dates back to the year 1560 when 72 local burghers received a privilege from local land administration, and started with unique production of wheat beer and malt. Cvikov is located in Northern Bohemia, along the German-Bohemian border, which is characterised by beautiful Lusatian mountains and vast forests.

Such a beautiful environment needs a local brewery with outstanding products and so it is – the current brewery as we see it now was built in the second half of the 19th century and local lagers have not passed unnoticed – the other way round, Cvikov became famous in whole Northern Bohemia with its Glassblowers lager specially crafted for local Glassworks – indeed these guys were working in an utmost hot and challenging environment and they were keen to water themselves with a refreshing yet light Cvikov lager – By the way, do you know Glassblowers are the only profession in the current Czech Republic where you are legally allowed to drink beer whilst working?

The fairy tail ended in 1968 when local communist authorities decided to close down the brewery – a decision that brought major frustration about the beer loving community in Bohemia who loved Cvikov lagers – this can be demonstrated by an inscription found on the façade done by a local brewer “Asshole Vojta closed the brewery 1.1.1968”

Luckily, miracles sometime happen: Bohemia became a  free and  capitalist country again in 1989 after a 40 years dark period and soon caught up with its pre-war manufacturing excellence and Cvikov brewery was saved by a local entrepreneur in 2013. They have reinstated brewing in old brewery premises allowing the public to admire the fantastic brewing heritage of this outstanding brewery.

Today, The brewery is a recognized Real Bohemian lager specialist on the artisanal side (low batch hand-made production) with the range starting from the traditional very special 8° gravity beer called „Glassblower“ (ABV 3,5%) but also with the reputed Key premium lager, being the perfect reinvigoration of the Old Bohemian Pilsener lager with a generous malt body coupled with delicate bitterness. All Cvikov beers always come unfiltered & unpasteurised to underline their craft & authentic character.

Cvikov Glassblower 8°

Our 8° glassblower is an almost extinct style of beer and one of the most remarkable ones. Historically, it has been drunk in the region for at least two centuries and that being in Glassworks during work - it inherently belonged to every pub confection in North Bohemia, the glassmaking region in which hand blowing of glass is performed up until today as one of the last places in Europe. During the creation of the recipe of our "eight", we put emphasis on its lightness combined with fantastic drinkability as is intended to primarily extinguish thirst. The beer is uniquely still quite complex though with decoction mashing (one mash) so it has nothing to do with low-cost light lagers that you commonly find on the market. Fun fact, did you know that glassblowers are the only occupation in the Czech Republic where you are legally allowed to drink beer whilst working?

Cvikov Luz 10°

A non-pasteurized & unfiltered lager on the lower session strength, which is brewed in the same style as our flagship Klic pilsener and you get the benefit of a lower ABV whilst preserving a full body character. For this product, we are using the famous Pilsen type of malt and Saaz hops. In comparison with the Klic Pilsener, the fermentation is slightly faster but maturation lasts every respectable one month. Expect a very complex beer for the ABV.

Cvikov Klic 12°

This artisanal unfiltered & unpasteurised pilsener is characterised by higher bitterness and fullness, which gives it a balanced malt-bitter taste in this combination. The recipe was created by preserving the “old Bohemian” taste of beer, which is characterised by a golden to amber colour and a higher fullness of malt-flavour. The unbelievably generous malt body coupled with a noble bitterness makes it a rare example of a true Old Bohemian Beer in the fashion of beer brewed in this part of the world in late 19th century. One not to miss out on.

Same as the other Cvikov lagers with the exception of the Glassblower, this beer bears the name of one of the peaks of the local Lusatian mountains. The 11° is unpasteurised but it comes filtered (the only beer in the Cvikov range). It is characterised by a golden colour that is highlighted by sparkling clarity. Fine filtration reduces the yeast taste of this beer. This is a very drinkable and refreshing lager.

Cvikov Festive 13°

Our 13° semi-dark festive lager is brewed from three types of malt – Pilsen, Bavarian and caramel, with classic old school decocting brewing on two mashes. Each of the malts gives the beer something different. The Pilsner malt forms a basic flavour, the Bavarian increases the perceived body of the beer and the caramel malt is conveying the pleasantly bitter taste of a multi-stage semi-dark beer. This is an artisanal amber lager that is exceptionally balanced and brewed in low-batches for real beer connoisseurs.
